I had an awake craniotomy elsewhere to remove a brain tumour.
10 days later, a day after the stitches were removed, my wound was leaking quite a bit of fluid running down my face and neck. My husband took me straight to the DCN as pre operatively I saw consultants there for the Condition for 5 1/2 years.
I didn’t call them, I felt it was justified I attend the after hours care at the hospital as soon as possible, so I did just appear there in the evening as it may have been a clinical emergency if this was CSF or an infection which could lead to a brain/bone flap infection.
Anyway, all staff I dealt with were very kind, caring, compassionate, thorough and professional. They gave me a CT scan with contrast, swabbed and tested the wound to check for infection and added 3 further stitches to the bottom of the incision. The neurosurgical team dealt with me, along with nurses, and radiology staff. One of the staff was worried about adding the stitches to my head as I couldn’t be given anything to numb the area or any medication to do so. I felt so sorry for him as he was worried he didn’t want me to be in pain while he was adding the stitch, he was very kind and thoughtful.
A further 2 stitches were added and it did the trick, they made sure I was fine before I left, moving about to ensure no further leakage. I was very impressed by everyone I encountered.
Fantastic job and thank you very much, keep up the good work.
