"Disappointed with postnatal care"

About: University Hospital Lewisham / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I was admitted for an emergency C sec at Lewisham. The baby was premature at 34 weeks and had to be kept in NICU.

I developed high BP after birth due to which i was put on higher dose of medication and my BP had to be monitored regularly. Since the baby was in NICU I had to come for my postnatal check in the maternity ward on 5th floor. Even though until my discharge the experience at hospital had been amazing and i was treated with affection and respect it was completely opposite with the postnatal midwives.

Every time I had to wait for hours, and I literally mean hours, before anyone would see me. I was asked to come in early morning and then had to wait till 1pm and yet no one saw me.

Considering that I was having issue with my BP and these are medical professionals not sure how they think making me wait for half day would help when the actual thing was a 10 minute job. Especially when i can see midwives sitting at reception desk having coffee.

Extremely disappointed.

I am sorry that your experience has caused you to complain. At Lewisham and Greenwich Trust we strive to ensure all women receive the highest level of care, and have a positive experience whilst under our care. I apologise that this was not the level of care you received, and that your experience was not a positive one when you came for your postnatal check after discharge.

The issue of postnatal checks on the ward has been discussed and addressed at the Maternity ward meeting and the expectation is that all women coming in for checks after discharge is to have their checks as soon as they arrived on the ward and any delay will need to be discussed with the woman herself.

We have also put in place a formal pathway for women coming back to the ward for checks, with a time slot allocated and this will incorporated in the midwives work load as they commence their shifts, that way they will be expecting the women to come in for checks and will be ready with possibly no delay. With this plan in place, we hope to make postnatal checks experience better for women and their families.

I also want to thank you for highlighting this issue, as the best way of improving our services is by listening to women and their families and continuously learning from what they tell us.

I hope that I have addressed all of your concerns, that you feel assured that lessons have been learnt as a result of your experience, and that any necessary actions have been taken. However, if you remain dissatisfied, I am happy to arrange further meeting to try and resolve things for you further.

Kind regards
