I have had T1 for 44 years and have constantly struggled to achieve good blood glucose control. I recent years my condition has led to diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.
I take between 10 and 15 blood tests a day, involving finger pricking. After hearing about Flash Glucose Monitoring I approached my consultant at the hospital clinic to be told I was a suitable candidate. Unfortunately I am now suffering from the prescribing postcode discrimination in the NHS in Scotland. I live in Tayside and the health board has claimed it will not prescribe the sensors and this position will remain until after a tech report due in the summer.
Recent info has come to light exposing this as untrue and some GPs in Tayside are prescribing the sensors! Meanwhile other heath boards in Scotland are prescribing.
I buy the sensors when I can but have a low income and they cost about £50 each. Despite this, there has been a huge improvement in my diabetes management because of the flash system.
I am upset, angry, disillusioned, feel excluded and ignored by politicians I have contacted and misled by publicly funded Tayside Health Board. I am totally at a loss as to why I go to a clinic when I can’t get the help I need.
