"Arrogant attitude from nurse in A&E"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Was brought into a&e. My husband came with me. We were seen by a staff nurse who was far too full of themselves. Far too outspoken, they kept talking over us and when we tried to speak seriously they would make a joke, not what you would expect.

They would not listen to me when i was describing my symptoms, they actually repeated them back to me wrong and said oh no that's what we call it.

Should it not be documented from the patients point of view, seeing as we are the ones going through it? They came off as arrogant and self-centred as if they could not care less about me or my pain.

We were quickly herded back to the waiting room as if we were not important. We actually felt like cattle. When we were called back through it was another nurse. My husband raised the previous nurse's attitude with her and she rolled her eyes and all she said was "well yeah that's X for you".

This is not acceptable, that staff are aware of this misconduct and let it slide. Never in my time in any hospital have i came across someone more arrogant than this. Thankfully we did not have to see them again while we were in the cubicle.

Some hours later I was discharged and as we left the arrogant nurse said to my husband "oh that yous off, I thought you would have been gone ages ago as it wasn't anything major".

It took all my strength not to slap them. How on earth they became a nurse I shall never know.

Dear Grey56

I am so sorry to hear about your recent experience in the Emergency Department. I am disappointed to hear that the staff nurse did not listen to you and that you felt they were arrogant and self centred. This is not the standard that I would expect and I would like to offer my sincere apologies. It is essential to listen to every patient in order to plan on going care and important to explore all symptoms.

I would like to investigate this further and in order to do so, I would be grateful if you would call my colleagues in patient affairs on 01355 585325.

I am sorry that you had such a negative experience and would like to reassure you that we take staff attitude very seriously. I expect every member of the team to demonstrate care and compassion at all times. I do hope to hear from you.

Kind regards

Lise
