"In Good Hands at the Surgical Unit"

About: Sheffield Children's Hospital / Ophthalmology

Being the mother of a teenage son I was very impressed by the facilities to accommodate teenagers - i.e.

separate room for them to hang out it away from toddlers and young children prior to surgery. During our visit the staff from beginning to end were brilliant. Explaining everything. The anaesthetist comes to talk to you, then the consultant surgeon who is performing the surgery, and nurses and other theatre staff and support clinical staff also continually talk to you about the procedure that your child is going to have. Reassurance is aplenty. You are given a pager to take to a waiting area that vibrates and flashes lights to inform you when your child is out of surgery and you then go to the reception area to tell the receptionist your bleeper has gone off which alerts her to contact clinical staff to come and collect you to take you to your child in the recovery room. Your then taken with your child to the post-op ward where you can attend to and reassure your child as he/she rouses further from the anaesthetic. Drink is promptly supplied, most welcome after hours of fasting, followed by toast or sandwiches, Your child is checked a number of times before she/he is deemed fit for discharged.

The staff at the Children's Hospital should feel proud of their hard work and continued efforts to provide such extraordinary care to their patients. Thank you so much.
