Following my referral to the Urology Department a CT scan was arranged within 10 days and I was seen by the Consultant on Tuesday 13th and operated on by him on Monday 19th March for the removal of the right kidney together with a 17cm growth, which later was shown to be a multi cystic T2 cell carcinoma. The removal was carried out by open surgery with an epidural as well as general anaesthetic.
On regaining consciousness in ICU I received nothing but wonderful nursing care from all the staff and the pain control was without fault as at the most I experienced some discomfort. On the third day the epidural was finished. Had I been treated privately the care I received at all times could not have been improved.
On the third day I was also taken to the Ward where again I experienced as good care as the hard pressed nursing staff were capable of providing. On the first night I was unfortunate to be the last to receive my medication which was administered to me at 0035 and followed by lights out at 0100, i.e. the next day!
Regular visits by the Consultant Surgeon took place to check progress, throughout my stay, provided encouragement and reassurance. The reassurance included comments on my concern about lack of bowel movement and limitations of mobility.
On the fifth day I returned home and saw the Consultant just over 3 weeks later.
He was pleased with my progress and again provided reassurance about my concerns that I was not yet opening my bowels regularly or normally, that the occasional presence of blood in my urine was OK and a complete lack of energy enabling me to do very little, including walking 150 yards without a rest, were all to be expected after such an operation.
He has arranged for a follow up CT Scan to be given in 5 months and a further consultation with him after 6 months.
I cannot thank the staff of Kent & Canterbury Hospital for the care I have received.
"Outstanding care and treatment"
