"ACL surgery -sports injury."

About: Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust

Having been somewhat "palmed off" for months of visits to local doctors and walk in centres, I was eventually referred to QA hospital and the orthopaedic department. From then on everything has been far better than I could have expected. I was seen by a consultant who amazed me with his knowledge and pretty much knew what was wrong from a few simple questions and exercises. I was sent for scans and it was confirmed that I had ruptured my ACL. I was then placed on the waiting list for the operation once I had been informed of the potential risks involved. Some time later (understandably, as my knee was obviously not as important as alot of the surgery performed here) I was given a date for the operation. To my relief, it was the same consultant performing the operation, which put me at ease straight away as it was obvious how he had my best interests at heart and was clearly extremely competent (something a physio confirmed prior to the surgery).

The operation went as expected, however the scan didn't show that there was another ligament that I had issues with. An appointment was made 6 weeks after the initial operation to see if another operation was required. My appointment was again with the consultant and he was fully aware of exactly what my recovery should involve (even remembering that I should have been in a brace and immediately asked where it was). A few simple exercises and another look over the scans confirmed that another operation was required. The consultants professionalism and expertise when performing the initial operation had caught an issue that could have caused me further problems down the line, and possibly rendered the first operation pointless.

I am now on the waiting list for the second operation, but couldn't be more happy with how I have been treated in my care so far, and have no concerns in placing my trust in the consultant and his colleagues again in the near future.
