"Discharged without any thoughts for aftercare..."

About: Royal Stoke University Hospital

My father was admitted in early January after visit to a & e with pneumonia and bacteria in the blood.

Previously seen before Christmas when he got the pneumonia diagnosis but not admitted.

Recurrent chest infections following operation for Oesophageal cancer and subsequent radiotherapy 14 years ago but history not taken into consideration.

Xrays done in February showed significant and irreparable damage to the right lung.

Since found out that the same damage was present on the xray when he was in hospital.

Further investigation recommended.

There were promises of a scan whilst in hospital but this didn't happen. Discharged without any follow up being arranged or any plans for ongoing treatment.

Subsequent visits to the doctors surgery since after no improvements, another case of bacteria showing up in the blood and finally a referral to the chest clinic .

Several courses of antibiotics and steroids and still no improvements.

Chest clinic refused to see him as his condition was too serious and supposedly passed the message on to the GP that he needed a consultant appointment/referral instead. GP denies any knowledge of receiving the call and 2 weeks later finally referred him correctly after the error was highlighted by us.

The first appointment offered is in late April.

This was cancelled yesterday and no alternative offered.

Feel like the only alternative is to pay to get him seen sooner privately so that he can start getting the treatment that he needs. Feel completely let down by the NHS and that the different services are failing to work together.
