"Laser Eye Treatment"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Ophthalmology

I was only diagnosed with Glaucoma 3 weeks ago and was rushed to hospital by my optician. As you can imagine, this is a life altering condition and very scary indeed. My first visit, the staff were very kind and helpful but the consultant was quite blunt and just said you could lose your vision. She also tried to wipe my eyes after giving me drops. When I said that I could wipe my eyes by myself as I am not a child, she was insistent that she did it?

My second visit, the pressures were checked and again I was told that I could lose my vision by that my pressures were nice and low. I was then sent to have visual field eye tests and an eye scan. I was sent immediately home afterwards.

Third visit, the doctor thought he would be doing my laser eye surgery even though this hadn't been mentioned prior to the visit. I said I couldn't have it done due to the fact that I had driven there. He went on to say that as discussed previously, the visual eye field test results... I had to stop him there and say that none of this had been discussed with me. I had to ask him to see the imagery from the tests and he just glossed over what it meant. I was then sent home.

My final visit for laser eye surgery, I went armed with a load of questions so that I could be more informed as to what Glaucoma meant to my life. I put this to the staff nurse who mentioned it the consultant. A male staff nurse took me down to the laser room. I was kept waiting outside for 15 minutes whilst I could hear the doctor and the male staff nurse talking about me very loudly. I could hear the doctor saying that I had been there 3 times so why didn't I understand what was happening to me. They were also laughing. I could also hear the staff nurse asking him to calm down and should he send me back to the waiting area. When I was finally allowed into the room, the doctor asked me if I knew what was about to happen. When I said no, that I hadn't been given much information prior to this and that I had lots of questions, he basically shouted at me saying 'why, if you've been here 3 times already, why didn't you ask the questions then?'

As you can imagine, I was very upset and humiliated by this treatment. I do not want to go back and have requested to my doctor that he sends me somewhere else in future.
