About: Addenbrooke's Hospital / Accident and emergency

My mother has advanced dementia and was in hospital for 5 days accompanied 24 hrs a day by her carers. We thought it was a very good thing the carers were allowed to stay and attribute part of the speed of her recovery to the fact that there was a familiar face. We appreciated the fact that the hospital could give my mother a separate room when one was available, a provision which kept her calmer than she might have been on a ward. We were satisfied that the hospital did all they could to aid her recovery and the scores above were made in consultation with the carers. We appreciated the considerate way we understand, the nurses and doctors included my mother in conversations and were very kind.

I have power of attorney for my mother's health but live near Doncaster so it would have been helpful if the communication between the hospital and myself had been better. It was impossible to speak to a doctor on a daily basis. Although I could speak to the staff nurse however she said that some of my questions would have to be addressed to the doctor and that she would ask the doctor to call. The calls did not come.

I know that my mother can be very difficult and uncooperative when in an unfamiliar environment and this made me more concerned about how quick her recovery would be.

Initially my mother attended A and E and then, I think, Nurology.
