"Mis-diagnosed infection"

About: Ilkeston Community Hospital

When an area the size of a large watch face swelled on my forehead near the point I had scratched it four days earlier, I took myself to ICH walk-in clinic. Despite being told they were busy and there would be a wait, I was actually seen quite quickly by a nurse who said she had started her shift early to help with the workload. She examined my head thoroughly and declared that it was definitely Nnot infected but was a result of the scratch and would go down soon. In her defence, she did say that if it didn't I should take myself to Derby Royal and have a doctor look at it. When my whole head had swelled up by Sat night, I did just that on Sunday. Even the receptionist there took one look and said "Oo, cellulitis." This is a skin infection and, whilst not normally seen on the head, seemed very clear to her. I spent the day there with two bottles of antibiotic dripping into me, before leaving at 10pm with a double strength course of antibiotics. On the Friday (Good Friday admittedly) and with my vital signs still strong, no sickness and no sponginess to the infected area, I'm sure the nurse felt she had made the right decision. But she didn't know for sure what it actually was. I feel she should have tried to get a second opinion, or at least admitted she wasn't sure and sent me straight to Derby Royal.

Thank you for raising your concerns regarding your attendance at Ilkeston Community Hospital Minor Injuries Unit on Easter Friday. I am sorry you feel that the nurse who assessed and treated you did not refer you to the Royal Derby Hospital A & E for a second opinion on the day you attended. The reason for this was, given her experience and knowledge, she did not find anything on your assessment to indicate that you had a definite infection at the time.

It was therefore felt appropriate for you to continue to observe for signs of concern and attend A &E only if these symptoms should occur.

I am sorry to hear that your symptoms did deteriorate over the next two days and that you needed to attend A & E. I hope you make a speedy recovery and that this experience will not affect your decision to use our service in the future should the need arise. Please could you contact our Patient Experience Team on 01773 525119 if you wish to discuss this further. Thank you for providing this feedback as we are committed to identifying opportunities for learning and to improve our patients' experiences of services. Julie Henson, Senior Sister, Ilkeston Hospital Minor Injuries Unit
