"My care at nevill hall"

About: Glan Irfon Nevill Hall Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust

(as the patient),

I was originally admitted to Nevill Hall in mid december with a broken leg. I had an operation a couple of days later where they pinned and plated my shattered lower femur just above my right knee replacement. Most of my experiences of the hospital were good but despite the phyios and my consultant that I should be partially weight bearing I was told by a very rude nurse that I didn't need a chair to take me to the loo. I politely asked them to check my notes and, eventually another nurse in blue took me to the loo in a chair. This was continued till I was discharged to Glan Irfon at Builth Wells to continue my physio and rehab.

Nobody took much interest in my complaints about a pain I was suffering from around my knee and little interest was taken about my erratic blood pressure. I was not comfortable with being sent to Glan Irfon as I did not feel physically ready to be discharged. I suffered several falls at home due to imbalance, possibly caused by my fluctuating blood pressure. I then sat down one day and couldnt stand up because of the excruiating pain and the fact that my right leg couldn't support my weight at all. I was readmitted to hospital and had a temporary fix to my knee with a revision pending by the consultant. I wrongly assumed that this  operation would be carried out whilst I was an Inpatient but they summarily discharged me yltnecerwith no information as to when the procedure would be carried out. I had to be carried to the ambulance and then carried up to my flat 2 floors up. I have now been either house bound in hospital or at home since December. I am unable to get downstairs or go out since my first admission. I am in constant acute pain and am on two different strong painkillers to manage the pain. The total disregard for my situation, the lack of any sensible information and no apparent communication between nursing staff and the surgeon and his firm with regard to my ongoing treatment is totally unacceptable in my opinion. My husband is in his seventies and also suffers from arthritis in his knees and he is my main carer as I am unable to do very much for myself. I have to be supervised whilst bathing and dressing. Once I am safe in my chair he can relax. He has to do all the cooking and fetching and carrying for me. This on top of the fact that he has a business to run. There has to be someone near a phone at all times in case I fall or have an accident. I would appreciate your comments and what you intend to do with regard to the revision of my right knee.

The ambulance service, though very slow to attend were excellent.
