"Shocked"

About: William Harvey Hospital (Ashford) / Accident and emergency

I never complain especially about the NHS but feel i need to this time! I took my relative to a&e on a saturday night and i was completely shocked at the hygiene levels! In the waiting room there was litter all around, didnt think much of that as its more patients responsibility but then when we were seen there were medical wrappers on the floor, blood spots splattered on floors, used tissues all around aswell as not one bed being covered before each patient. Nurses were eating crisps/snacks from the side of the computers (overworked without sufficient breaks) which must i add contained personal details on screen to various other patients aswell as my relative in that area that could clearly be read by anyone incliding myself. Yes the staff worked extremely hard to see every patient to the best of their ability i could tell you in detail atleast 3 other parients problems, xrayresults & if i had a good memory tgeir dates of birth & address! confidentiality was definatly compromised and hygiene levels scared me, there wasnt a cleaner in sight with mess everywhere i was cleaning around me while waiting! I felt dirty leaving which is upsetting in a uk hospital you expect the basics covered! I hope i never need to attend there in an emergency as I fear without a major deep clean i could be a worse situation!

We were very sorry to hear you and your relative did not have a good experience and were unhappy with the cleanliness and confidentiality in the Accident and Emergency department at the William Harvey Hospital. We would like to be able to get further information from you so that we can undertake a thorough investigation in order to improve our services. We would therefore be grateful if you could please contact the PALS team. You can do this by:
