"Otter Ward"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Ear, Nose and Throat

I have been in Otter Ward overnight after a turbinectomy surgery on Monday the 19th of March 2018. Overall I am satisfied with the ward conditions and some staff were nicer than the others. My staying was nice but I haven’t been involved too much in the decisions about my care. It was like everyone was coming and telling me what will be happening and that’s it. The pain management was very good, whenever I was in need of pain relief it was available at request. My main concern is that on my discharge from the hospital on Tuesday I was not treated fairly. I have been visited in the morning by the team and told me that they will be removing the nasal packs and I can go home. Everything fine at this point but when they came to remove them they didn’t offered me any pain relief or whatsoever and belice me the removal of the packs traumatised me and I bled heavily. Not talking about the pain as this can’t even be described. So I’ve been left to wait for the second pack to be removed but no one was coming until after 2 hours nearly when I went and asked them to come and remove the secknd pack aswell. Then when they came to discharge me later afternoon they came just with Paracetamol and Ibuprofen for taking home when actually in the hospital i have been on very strong pain relief (oral morphe) but no discharge note no nothing so I’ve asked them about this and been hand it one just after the request. My shock was to find out that it was no need for any antibiotics following the surgery or a follow up or something it was just they discharged me and that’s it don’t want to see me. Obviously I went home and after 3 days I’ve ended up to be sent by my GP back to the hospital as I’ve developed a nasty infection after the surgery and my nose and throat were full of pus. After being sent back to be checked by the specialist they saw that the infection was normal and put me straight on antibiotics and nasal duches. So now apart from the surgery I’ve got a nasty infection and the pain is doubled. Been told that I will be seen again in 2 weeks time but just received a phonecall from the hospital yesterday saying that the specialist wants to see me this coming Wednesday so means that they were a bit scared after discharging me without any advice or any course of antibiotics when they clearly stated that all the surgeries got a risk of infections but they couldn’t be bothered to give me some IV antibiotics while in the hospital just to prevent any infections!
