"No the wonder the NHS is in crisis"

About: Wharfedale Hospital

My son rang me to say he was feeling breathless and unwell, as I live 80 miles away I checked where the nearest walk in centre was. Otley came up as a minor injury and minor illnesses centre so I advised him to go there. He went by taxi as did not want to drive only to be told by the receptionist he could not be seen by a doctor unless he had an appointment but could sit and wait for two and a half hours for advice off a nurse. He was told to go in the corridor and ring 111. He was alone and breathless and I was amazed by the uncaring attitude of this staff member. What if he had collapsed in the corridor where no one could see him. He had difficulty getting a signal and his battery was low. I rang the receptionist to ask if he could use one of their telephones to ring 111 and was told no. I asked why the web site states that they see minor illnesses when they don't. The receptionist was very rude on her manner especially when I told her I was a nurse her response was well you should know better about the 111 system, she also refused to give me her name until I insisted. My son did eventually get through to 111 and they sent an emergency ambulance. They checked him out in the ambulance in the car park and then walked into the department with my son as they seemed surprised that they wouldn't see him. They asked if staff could do some bloods and were told no. They ended up taking him to St James Hospital. This was taking up an emergency ambulance and also ending up at a busy A&E which my son was trying to avoid as he knows they are under pressure and isn't that what the walk in and minor injuries centres for??? No the wonder the NHS is in crises.
