"Fantastic care"

About: St Michael's Hospital / General surgery

(as a service user),

Mermaid Centre

A couple of weeks before Christmas I was called for my first mammogram I thought nothing of it as I couldn’t feel any lumps. A week or so later I held a letter referring me to the mermaid centre, this was in between Xmas and new year . I didn’t worry to much as 27 years ago I had a lump and it was benign, i was so sure this was the same lump. I had another mammogram and had to have a core biopsy just to be sure. Two weeks later I went back for my results and was horrified to be told I had cancer growing inside the benign lump. Words can’t explain how I felt I just felt like crumbling.

My nurse Sarah was fantastic, she made me feel calm and talked me through my cancer. What I found reassuring was the surgeon Mrs English came to talk to me on the same visit so I didn’t have to go home and dwell on things. A week later I’d had my surgery and at the moment having 3 weeks radiotherapy I just want to thank and praise the staff at the mermaid and sunrise centre , Thankyou guys so so much.

Dear avocettr46

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience of the Mermaid and Sunrise Centre's, especially at what must be an extremely difficult time for you; what devastating news for you to receive.

It is wonderful to hear that Sarah made you feel calm and took the time to talk you through everything; I am also pleased that Mrs English saw you on the same visit and that you were able to have your surgery so quickly.

I will share your feedback and gratitude with all staff who would have contributed to your care so far as I am sure they will be delighted to hear that they are making your journey a little bit easier.

I hope that your radiotherapy went as well as it could and that you are now on the road to recovery.

With kind regards

Michaela Brewer, Patient & Family Experience Coordinator
