"Great level of care and support"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Day Surgery

(as a service user),

I went in for day surgery on my shoulder yesterday. From the nurses to my consultant Mr Tanagho to the anaesthetist Ms Robertson, everyone was very friendly and approachable. They listened to my worries and took time to talk through them all, reassuring me that the decisions were mine to make.

After the operation it took me some time to waken up properly which meant I stayed overnight. The staff on the day surgery ward were brilliant and nothing was too much trouble for them. The difference in my movement in just one day is incredible!  We’re very lucky to have the NHS and I’m thankful to everyone I met yesterday.

The only thing I would like to see improved is the consistency in the printed information given to patients. For example, the information leaflets I was given at my pre-op stated to keep the wound dressing dry for 2-5 days but the leaflet I received before I came home tells your change the dressing after 24 hours. Also the phone number for NHS24 needs to be updated. Minor points but maybe useful for patients.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Sarahg1982,

Thank you so much for taking time to share this lovely accolade top the team. I will pass your comments to the pre-op and day surgery team so they can review the leaflet and change the NHS 24 number. These are not minor, they are confusing and in the case of the NHS 24 number, not correct. I agree entirely, it will be very helpful to sort these.

As a long-standing radiographer (yes, I should sit down!), I suspect the difference in advice for the dressing may be specific to the Orthopaedic surgeon. All clinicians may give slight variations of advice based on there particular practice and experience, which makes this kind of leafleted advice more difficult to remain exact across the board.

I hope you are as fully recovered as possible.

best wishes,

Eunice
