"Operation cancelled as no theatre staff"

About: Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital / Trauma and Orthopaedics

I've just had my long awaited day surgery for my knee cancelled. Reason given "no theatre staff". The next date available is over 6 weeks away but as the recovery will clash with a holiday that I had booked on the strength of the original date, I'm back by 3 months. I've had my pre-med, so that's mine and the hospital's time and money wasted. When I saw the orthopaedic surgeon in December he assured me "surgery will be quite soon as it's day surgery".

6 months is not "quite soon" to someone who is desperate to get their mobility back. Why is there a lack of theatre staff?

Dear Patient

I am sorry to read that your surgery was recently cancelled and for any distress caused to you. I will share your feedback with senior staff in the hospital so that they, too are aware. Should you wish to discuss this further please contact me at pals@nnuh.nhs.uk.

With kind regards

Sarah Eastwood, PALS Manager
