"Navigating Hairmyres hospital"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres

(as a relative),

I came up from England to visit family who was not well and to help out one of the things I helped with was to bring my relative to hospital appointments. Now not being from around here I decided to do some research I looked the hospital up on the NHS website and looked at the map to find out where I was going turns out the Main outpatients department is not on the map on the website, we get to the hospital and the map is completely different and everything is in different places from what is on the map on the website, I noticed A LOT of signage that was not on "official signs" just laminated paper with information!

In the corridors instead of actual overhead signage there was again printed signs. This does not look professional.

At the appointment I had to take my relative for tests to be carried out to find out not only is the department not where it was on the website map but also not where it says on the hospital map so again we had to follow printed signs - I take it more than one clinic has been moved as we noticed a lot more printed self made signage

It makes the hospital look like it has no funds

none of the floors match floors are dirty and scuffed and dented

from walking in the door to walking out it felt like no one cared about the hospital or how it looks

Dear Calder87

Thank you for letting us know about your visit and the problems you encountered. I'm so sorry that you had such a negative experience when you visited us. By way of explanation; over the winter we had to make some rapid changes to a few of our departments which is why the signage is not as it should be.

You may be interested to know that we have a longer term plan to review our signage across the hospital in an effort to make our signage and our directions more dementia friendly. This will take some time but please be assured that we will continue to work to make these improvements as soon as we can.

I do hope your relative is feeling better.

Kind Regards

Susan
