"Treated my daughter as an equal partner in her care"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow)

(as a parent/guardian),

After a battle with many medical professionals over several years we were very lucky to get to meet Mr. Hajivassiliou 7 years ago. He immediately listened to my concerns about my daughters health and got to the bottom of what exactly was wrong with her.

I firmly believe that his holistic assessment and excellent listening skills, teamed with his incredible knowledge and surgical expertise saved my daughter's life.

Mr Hajivassiliou has operated on my daughter on many occasions and likely will do on many more to come, and despite the anxiety which I feel, like all parents who watch their child being taken into the operating theatre, I trust him completely to take perfect care of my daughter.

He always listens to my concerns and takes the time to explain things to both me and my daughter, treating her as an equal partner in her care at all times which has meant that she has complete trust in him which is so important for a child undergoing major surgery.

The only negative thing I have to say about Mr Hajivassiliou is that he does not have adult patients as unfortunately my daughter will be 15 this year and sooner or later she will have to move to adult services. We will all be very sad when that day comes as Mr Hajivassiliou is very special to our whole family.

Dear SM18

Thank you for sharing your experience on Care Opinion.

Your feedback highlights the very difficult circumstances that parents have to face when their child is ill and you have to place them in the care of others. It is lovely to hear that you and your daughter have developed such a positive relationship over the years with Mr. Hajivassiliou and this has given both of you the trust and reassurance that your daughter is being so well cared for at all times.

We have shared your feedback with Mr. Hajivassiliou and he was very touched to receive this.

I appreciate that the transition across to adult services will be a very anxious one for your daughter and yourself and I would encourage you to discuss this with Mr. Hajivassiliou in order that you all have time to adjust to any change in arrangements in a planned way when the time comes.

I hope your daughter is well at this time.

Best wishes

Pam
