"Great Hospital - let down by their Pharmacies"

About: St Helier Hospital / Dermatology

William Morgan

Hospitals? - Never needed them, I am only in my early 70's!

And then it all started to happen.

First of all, following a holiday in Jersey, 2016, I returned home to find (thanks to my local GP’s that I had a Prolapse disc problem and

I was taken to Epsom and finally operated on (successfully) at St. Helier for an operation on 4 discs. Thank you so much to my surgeon.

Start of 2017. Returned home on a BA flight from a lovely relaxing holiday and was quickly rushed in to Epsom Hospital two days later with pneumonia! Thanks to all of the Epsom Hospital staff but most especially, thank you to the doctor from Fitznells, Ewell. Did you save my life?

January 2018, once again, returning from a holiday on a B.A. flight. This was 2018 " Flue time" and I was one of the people who spent two or more weeks in bed with Flue/ Bronchitis. Thanks to a member of staff, you were great.

My hospital experiences over the last two years have been experiences I will not forget for a very long time. They are mostly absolutely wonderful in all treatment aspects apart from one!!!

I live in Ewell village, Epsom and I have been helped/treated at both Epsom and St. Helier hospitals a number of times over the last two + years.

Why oh why is the majority of the hospital's staff able to look after their patients so well at the hospitals, but the Pharmaceutical departments are so slow and clearly undergoing administrative and/or work load problems following discharges when patients still need their outpatient care and medication. Have a look at St. Helier Pharmacy at around mid-day any day! It makes one wonder whether the delays are actually planned!

I really do not know where I go now for my future outpatient treatment as, despite my Consultant giving me a prescription to look after my health over the next 6 months, my local hospital pharmacy (Epsom!) now tells me that they can only dispense 50% of the medication that I need.

Please can someone help me - I am on this medication for the rest of my life!!!!

Thanks for your review. We're pleased to hear that your experience with our hospitals over the last few years has been a good one.

With regards to our Pharmacy, we are sorry you have experienced long waits and will make sure your feedback is passed on to the Pharmacy management team.

?The Trust routinely only issues up to a maximum of three months supply for hospital only medicines on a prescription ?at any one time, even if longer supplies have been requested. This is to minimise any waste as your treatment needs may change particularly when starting a new medicine.

If you would like to discuss this further, please call our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 020 8296 2508 or email est-tr.pals@nhs.net
