"Staff Name badges"

About: Borders General Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

As an NHS employee, I was well aware of the differing opinions about the yellow name badges that are now compulsory uniform.

As a recent inpatient for 2 weeks I can only say that the yellow name badges should definately be part of the uniform! When very ill and being nursed by multiple members of staff it was so helpful to be reminded of their name and role and I can only encourage those who don't wear them to get on and wear as they make all the difference to us as patients.

I would also comment on the little boards behind the beds (which should have a patients name/what we like to be called and our consultant, along with any other important information on it) My board was not filled in for half of my stay and when I was nil by mouth for 8 days this was not filled in and I kept getting offered any drinks and 2 biscuits given to me by the catering team. I was in a position to tell them what I was allowed to have but there were plenty vulnerable elderly patients on the ward with me who wouldn't have been able to speak up.

The above comments are to make the service the best it can be and are in no way a complaint. I had amazing care throughout my stay and am very thankful to all the staff involved in my care during my prolonged stay.

Thank you for your positive feedback regarding your care in ward 16. It is great to hear how the name badges helped you remember staff names I appreciate when there are many people involved in your care it can be difficult to remember who is who.

I shall look into the information boards above patient beds this morning and continue thereafter to monitor their usage. There are patients on the ward at times who as you rightly said would accept a cup of tea if they were meant to be fasting and this can lead to a delay in procedures. Thank you for highlighting this matter.

Best wishes

Shona
