"You do not cry alone at St Lukes"

About: St Lukes Hospice

(as a relative),

There is so much I want to say about the paradise that is St Lukes Hospital, Kenton.

My darling husband, peter, who is in advanced stages of cancer is truly blessed to be in the care of the very special staff who work tirelessly to make the end of life a special time.

Being in denial but not facing up to the reality of his illness a hospice seemed a little frightening. How wrong were we. I followed the ambulance taking him to St Lukes and will always remember the warm and comforting feeling when seeing the beautiful buildings and grounds. Going through the main entrance to his room I felt an enormous weight being taken off me as the selfless and caring staff settled him in. For the first time in months I was overwhelmed by the loving and dignified way he was being treated. The room was lovely and not at all clinical with patio doors leading out to a patio and pretty gardens. This is a beautiful place. I will be forever grateful beyond words for the way we have both been looked after by the whole team, and this means everyone.

You do not cry alone at St Lukes, you do not feel alone at St Lukes. Every patient and every family member is made to feel special. There is always an arm around your shoulder. It would be impossible to make any one member of the team for a special mention as they are all very special people.

First class treatment by the amazing, dedicated doctors and nurses to all the medical staff. Not forgetting the family liaison staff looking after all our needs tirelessly in the background. If there were shower facilities downstairs I would us them instead of going home.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your feelings and experience about yourself and your husband at what must have been a very difficult time for you.

We appreciate your comments and are pleased you felt supported and we have shared this with staff. It is our aim to create an environment which is non clinical and conducive to feeling homely.

We thank you for your comments about shower facilities as we are always looking for feedback on how we can improve our services.

We wanted to keep you updated with changes we have made following your feedback

regarding the shower facilities as your feedback for improvement is important to us.

Since your comments we now offer families and carers use of the shower facilities once they are free from patient use.

Thank you once again for your suggestion

Every moment you spend with someone you love at the end of their life is so precious that you want to be with them constantly to the very end. Being able to access shower facilities downstairs means the worry of them passing while you are away from them is no longer an issue.

Thank you again for giving me peace of mind and beautiful thoughts of Peter's passing and the courage to deal with life in the best possible way I can 16 months on. I know how different it would have been had he not been at St Lukes. You all gave me strength - thank you.
