"Hard working staff, but too few"

About: Colchester General Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

My grandmother was admitted to a ward in this hospital & although the front line staff are clearly dedicated and hard working, I felt they were hampered in their efforts by middle & upper managers.

I was most disturbed that no front line nursing staff knew who their alleged leaders were (the names of senior nurse managers fell on deaf ears, although a number were aware of the chief executive). This was very clear when I asked to whom I should ultimately complain about the sparse numbers of qualified nursing staff that were supposed to be caring for my grandmother (staff could name their manager & matron but no further).

Perhaps the senior nurse managers should be more visible to the nursing staff, or else the chief executive should seriously consider their positions as being less than desirable as they clearly are not accountable to service users like myself.

Overall - great staff on the wards (on the whole) but an organisation that I feel is seriously let down by its leaders.
