My mother was sent to this unit following emergency hip surgery. It was obvious from the start that there were issues .No one seemed to know or care about her medical history or why she was there. They clearly had no understanding of her medical needs. The staff displayed little interest in caring for her and when I complained the situation got worse. She was left for long periods of time and even when she used her call bell the staff still either ignored it or took an extremely long time to go to her. She developed a urine infection and needed constant use of a commode but sadly was often left to fend for herself . After a few days the physio decided that my mother was fit for discharge which came as a surprise as it was evident that she most certainly wasn't. After some discussion, she was sent to darenth hosp for an ultra sound and given medication . She found the whole experience very demoralising and she was often spoken to in a very patronising manor. The staff were always complaining that they were short but when I visited on numerous occasions they were often sitting in the day room. My mums room was in a poor state of repair and was extremely grubby.
Seeing my mother in such a distressed state I felt I had no choice than to discharge her for her own well being.
Working in the medical profession myself I feel very concerned and disappointed with the lack of care and compassion.
