"My Total Knee Replacement"

About: Spire Little Aston Hospital

My knee operation journey began as NHS patient Oct 5th 2017. Consultant shook my hand introduce himself. Very informative. Preacessment Very through, explain everything about my forth coming Operation. Answering all my questions. Felt relaxed. January 23rd 2018. Admitted to hospital. The receptionist was polite directed me to ward Clark. You put me at ease immediately. Feeling nervous. Showed me to my room. Comfortable, tv. Ensuite. My family were able to visit me regularly. The staff nurse came chatted to me. Informed me of what time I had to wait, before Operation. What was going to happen. My husband was invited to stay with me till I was taken to the theatre. The anesthetis came had a chat with me. talking about what procedure I would have. The porter came at 11.30am. Escorting me walking to theatre totally relaxing me putting me at ease with a smile & chatting politely. I arrived in the recovery room. The porter bid his goodbyes. Telling me not to worry. I was in good hands. The nurse introduced herself. again went through everything with me. Pleasant. Chatting putting my fears at rest. The anesthetis came through from theatre explain the procedure spinal anisetic, sedation. Explained everything as he was about to do it. All the time making sure I understood everything that was happening in my knee journey. Checking through a check list of any health problems. This was done several times from preassment to being admitted and during my knee pathway journey. I had my knee operation at 12pm. By 2pm I was sitting in recovery being observed. Given sips of water. By 3.30pm I was back in the ward being observed regularly by the staff nurses, health care assistants, sisters. The staff were always pleasant caring. If you rang the bell for help for lu etc. They were there within 2 minutes. Nothing was ever to much trouble. Offering drink in the early hours. Catering staff helping with menus. When your feeling nauseas from the strong pain killers. No matter how busy nothing was to much trouble. Something I noted was how long a lot of the staff nurses, HCA porter had worked there many years happily. Enjoying their work. The teamwork was excellent. Nurses working with HCA. If needed

I was vomited th night after the operation. Rang the bell. Within 10 minutes the bed was changed I was made comfortable. My mind put at rest. Checked again within the hour to see I was ok. Antisickness drugs etc. I was discharged home 4th day after my operation. Did feel this was maybe a day early. As I was still feeling nauseas. Had vomited again. I did struggled with mobility for two days after I returned home. My husband was able to help me to mobile on my crutches. he is 70years. this was a big ask. We coped, was able after with crutches manage. Physios polite. Gave me confidence to mobilise & at classes in the weeks following. I would recommend this Hospital for health care. Felt care pathway 1 day short. Discharged 7 weeks. Good recovery. 5star Thanks
