On 30.11.17 I had a complete mastectomy of the left breast and a lump removed from the right. I cannot fault the pre or aftercare received from the surgeon and staff whilst in the unit; there was excellent professionalism and care. Upon discharge, I was told I would need radiotherapy as a follow up treatment and was told it would be about in 6 weeks time. NHS's
own NICE guidelines state radiotherapy should begin 3-6 weeks post surgery, perhaps a little later. I am now 3 months (12 wks.) post surgery and have heard nothing despite 'phone calls to the unit. All they were able to say that I was on the list and they were trying to secure a preliminary appointment with an oncologist. I am also on an aromatase inhibitor which can affect bone density. I have been promised a DEXA scan to establish a baseline density but I'm now 3 months in and have heard nothing further.
I have left a further message with the breast unit today requesting an update and considering trying to see an oncologist privately. From optimistic outset,
I now feel anxious and thoroughly demoralised by the whole thing.
"Excellent in unit, but not at arranging..."
