"Appalling treatment at fracture clinic"

About: Worthing Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

Broke my ankle 10 days ago.

Initially went to A&E and had an X-Ray and I had a simple fracture of the ankle bone.

They put me in a boot and told me to book an appointment at the fracture clinic.

Went to fracture clinic and was called into a room, I saw a doctor who said I would need to pop down to X-ray while I was there to check how the fracture was doing.

He then explained to me that I would need to keep the boot on for another 2 weeks and not put weight on it.

Then after 2 weeks start doing easy foot movements and also walk on the foot with boot on and crutches.

Then to go back after 6 weeks to have it checked again. So I went to X-Ray and then returned to the fracture clinic.

I was called into a room again, and a different consultant came into the room (now I assume he had seen the X-Ray I just had done) and with a very brusque manner said that it was a simple fracture and to take the boot off and just walk on it.

I asked him why the first doctor had told me something different, and he said I couldn't speak for him but as he was the consultant I should listen to him and just walk on the foot without the boot on.

I left quite confused, so had to resort in going on the internet when I got home and find some further advise.

I found that other NHS trusts in other areas off the UK give patients a very useful leaflet on what to do with these types of fractures.

I have printed it off and am following the exercises that is given on this leaflet.

So why can't Worthing hospital do the same, I have never broken a bone before so wasn't really sure what I should be doing to help myself, I realise this consultant probably is only interested in complicated fractures and mine wasn't very interesting for him, but to me (first time I have broken anything!!) it was quite important.
