"Saturday Night in A&E"

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital / Accident and emergency

Staff were wonderful, under the circumstances. I was on a trolley in a corridor for the best part of 12 hours in a lot of pain having been brought from another hospital by ambulance. A lot of the other patients were drunk and unbearable, or just unbearable which was also not the hospitals fault. I had pain treatment which meant I slept through a lot of it, my poor partner sat on a chair from 1am to 1pm the next day. The first member of the surgeons team I saw got straight to the point, knew what the problem was and I felt safe in his care. Sadly arriving on a Saturday night means there was no chance of a CT scan until Monday afternoon. Nevertheless I was as comfortable as I could be and staff moved me to a bed when they could. I have absolutely no complaints, I was very happy with staff, the facilities and the cleanliness of the hospital. Overall the care I received at this hospital was excellent. (This was the 3rd hospital I had visited and it had been a very, very long day from Saturday at 10 am when the pain started) Thank you to all the staff at Royal Sussex Hospital, in A&E, in the Gynae ward where I ended up, and in the CT department. I can't thank you enough for the care and the professional conduct of staff. All staff are doing a difficult job in difficult circumstances. Of course it would be better if more staff were available at weekends but that is another story! The pain got worse after I left but I had a diagnosis and pain relief so everything was okay, and I'm now getting better each day thanks to the help I recieved.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us following your recent visit to our Emergency Department, I know the staff will be grateful to hear that, despite the challenges in the department, your experience was comfortable.

I have recently spoken with Mike Viggers, Chairman for the Trust, who has updated me on the redevelopment plans for our Emergency Department, whilst I appreciate this does not change your overall experience, I do hope is reassuring to know that their are plans and funding in place to improve the department.

With best wishes to you
