About: WestMARC (West of Scotland Mobility and Rehabilitation Centre)

(as the patient),

My GP referred me to you for wheelchair re-assessment after I moved up from England last summer. Neither of us have heard from you. Can you please tell me how many months/years your waiting lists is please? I have returned to my GP recently and they had written to you again.

How do I feel? Abandoned, isolated and trapped.

I have a powered wheelchair in my bungalow which I cannot use to go anywhere outdoors when my mobility and pain are too restrictive as I cannot get a ramp until I have your assessment, as advised by social worker. The chair was often too painful outside anyway as has no suspension and was advised down south to get re-assessment. I have now taken receipt of my new Motability car with universal wheelchair hoist to help me be more independent alone but I cannot use it as don’t have ramp (see above) and I need re-assed for a hoist able wheelchair model which mine is not. I keep falling on my dangerous path/driveway from front door so if mobility and balance poor I am trapped indoors and am not an independent functioning human being. The more this occurs especially in winter rh more I don’t want to fall again and am experiencing overwhelming agoraphobic feelings.

I cannot phone you about this as phonecalls trigger panic attacks and anxiety disorder.

Dear Nibheis

I am sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied and feel let down by the service from WestMARC.

I would be really keen to reassure you that none of our Patients are waiting more than 6 months for an assessment and would encourage anyone that has not had any response after 2 weeks of a referral being submitted to contact the service.

WestMARC are measured against Nationally agreed Quality Ambitions which I have included below with the service results for December 2017:

* Direct issuing of manual wheelchairs:

The target is 95% within 2 weeks (WestMARC =94.9%) and 100% in 3 weeks (WestMARC = 98.8%)

* Specialist Assessment:

The target is 95% within 4 weeks (WestMARC=87%) and 100% within 8 weeks (WestMARC=97%) in December 2017

* Specialist Provision:

The target is 95% of Patients receive their specialist wheelchair within 14 weeks (WestMARC = 93.7%) and 100% within 18 weeks (WestMARC = 97.2%)

We would like the opportunity to capture your experiences more fully in order to investigate what may have happened and would prompt you to contact me to discuss potential next steps with regards to reassessment etc.

I would be happy to review your case further with you and have noted my contact details below for you to provide me privately your contact details.

We also encourage people to contact us in a variety of ways and as well as a dedicated line that all our Patients can contact to facilitate a repair or an assessment however the team also respond to email contacts if this would be more suitable using the following address: Westmarc@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Kind regards
