"Visit to my GP"

About: General practices in Ayrshire & Arran

(as a parent/guardian),

I took my 3yr old daughter to Girvan community hospital after warnings from her Nursery that cases of Scarlet Fever were in her room. My daughter showed some symptoms of the illness so I made an appointment with the local GP and the doctor wasn't welcoming. I was asked i"f I knew many mothers bring their "snotty nosed children" thinking they they have Scarlet Fever. I was shocked at this comment and at the GP's unfriendliness. I asked what they thought my daughter had and the GP said they couldn't confirm but said if it was Scarlet Fever that it was very early stages or slap cheek. I advised the GP that I was expecting a baby and was offered no information about risks and no reassurance.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Unicornmum,

I am sorry, this is really quite disappointing all round. If you would like to drop me a wee line and let me know which GP practice you were attending, then I will pass this to the appropriate practice for their reflection.

I hope your daughter is well and you have not had any ill effects either.

Thank you for taking time to share this,

Best wishes,

Eunice

Update posted by Unicornmum (a parent/guardian)

Dear Eunice,

My daughter now seems to have passed her illness I had her attend the practice for thank you. I just found the doctor'ss response as unprofessional and highly offensive. The whole conversation felt uncomfortable and it just felt that we were wasting her time. As a worried parent, you look for reassurance and advice not to be made to feel like you are there to annoy the doctor.

Thank you for your time and response.

Best Regards

Dear Unicornmum,

I am glad your daughter is better now and you are most welcome for the response. I am happy to help where I can, or find the right person to help.

I personally think it would do no harm to draw this to the attention of the appropriate practice. Please feel free to email me and let me know which one you attended. I will then be able to pass it on for their consideration. My email address is Eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk

best wishes,

Eunice
