"Appointment at Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic"

About: Victoria Hospital / Oral Surgery & Medicine

(as a service user),

This was an initial appointment following referral from my dentist to assess problems with a burning sensation in my mouth.  This had been going on for about 5 months and I had become increasingly anxious about it.

I was seen by Mr Graham.  Mr Graham listened carefully when I described my symptoms and he acknowledged my anxieties.  He took time to gather more information with follow up questions before a physical examination, which he had first described in detail.  His manner was immensely reassuring and patient.  He offered a tentative diagnosis, but made sure I understood that this needed to be confirmed by exclusion of other possible diagnoses.  However, he also stressed that there was no indication of anything more sinister, which immediately reduced my anxiety.  I had never heard of "Burning Mouth Syndrome" and was therefore grateful for the detailed explanation, which was backed up with a written information leaflet for me to read later.

I left the surgery feeling not only reassured, but also well informed about the possible diagnosis and what would happen next.  Thank you!
