"Appaulling behavour by Practice Manager"

About: Rockleigh Court Surgery

I have been with this practice for over thirteen years and this review is based on the experience I have had with the practice manager. I am asthmatic and have repeat prescriptions of medication. I normally obtain these via the doctor directly or calling through and arranging for them to be sent through to a pharmacist. I called today and spoke to a receptionist to obtain a repeat prescription and she advised that they don't take them over the phone and never have. I advised the receptionist that I had done so on many occasions and asked if she was new to the practice, she advised me that she wasn't and that could I could not have done that. I asked to speak to the practice manager as I wasn't lying and wanted to find out what was going on i.e. had they changed their policy? The practice manager from the beginning of the call spoke to me in an extremely rude manner, she advised me that she agreed with the receptionist and they had never produced a repeat prescription in that way. I advised her that I wasn't lying and to check my record, before I could finish my sentence she interrupted me to advise that she didn't have to do that, I asked her why she was talking to me in that tone and she said she was being 'firm' with me to put her point across, I advised her that I was not a child and didn't need anybody to be firm with me, that her tone was uncalled for and that she wasn't being firm, she was being unnecessarily rude! I also advised her that I was asking her to check my record to show that they had not received written requests and that I had indeed received prescriptions in this way. She went on to advise how going forward how I could obtain a repeat prescription and that she would talk to her staff. At no time was I rude to either the receptionist nor the practice manager, therefore the hostile behaviour of the practice manager was unwarranted. Bottom line is its seems that some of your staff have deviated from your practice policy and judging by your behaviour with me, I pity them!

Thank you for your comments.

As I explained to you on the telephone we do not accept such requests over the phone, except in exceptional circumstances, such as for our very frail and housebound patients.

This is to avoid mistakes, to save overloading our switchboard (which is often very busy) and to make the most effective use of staff time.

I have asked every member of staff if they had taken any such request recently from a non-housebound patient and all deny taking such a call.

With this in mind I decided to have a look for your most recent request on the 1st March, to see how you had requested your medication.

I have found a faxed copy of your request which I presume was sent to us by Tesco’s.

I am not sure what service you have in place with Tesco’s, but I do know that some pharmacies offer the service of requesting medication for the patient.

I can only assume that you normally ring Tesco’s with your request and that is where the confusion has arisen.

Tesco’s then put your request in writing and fax it over to us.

As far as I am aware we have never taken requests over the phone and certainly not in my 17 years of service.

Our surgery booklet outlines the prescription policy and also informs you of the ways in which we accept medication requests. This policy is also reiterated on our website.

I hope this clarifies the situation for you and looking forward to the future, I hope this matter can be resolved with all your prescription requests being put in writing to us.

If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact the surgery.
