"An excellent, caring, supportive..."

What I liked

I suffer from severe claustrophobia and have previously lost 5 pregnancies. Queens Hospital has very few windows and this made me feel extremely anxious. I told my midwife, who supported me greatly throughout my pregnancy, and she ensured that I had a tour of the maternity unit, well before my due date. She introduced me to every member of staff present on that day and explained my problem. They were all kind, caring and supportive. My consultant also ensured that all staff were aware of my issues and asked in advance that I have a room with a window. When I went into labour, I felt confident about the care I would recieve, despite negative media reports, as every single person I encountered in the Maternity units at Queens and King George's Hospitals was exceptionally caring and friendly. Nobody made light of my problem and I was treated with complete respect, kindness and dignity. My pain relief wishes were respected and everything was explained in detail. My labour was long and two midwives attended, with a thorough handover given. I needed an emergency C-Section and again every doctor explained what was happening, calming me down from a near panic attack at the thought of the operation. During the op, I felt calm, happy and confident in the surgeons, anaesthatists, doctors and nurses care. My baby wasn't breathing when she was born and this was handled in a sensitive way to minimise mine and my partner's distress. Thankfully, she was fine and healthy. In the high dependency unit, the staff were fantastic, especially the labour ward co-ordinator who went out of her way to ensure myself and other patients were comfortable and happy. I stayed in the post natal ward for three days, and that time was happy, despite the circumstances. My baby and I were treated like VIPs, as were my family. The midwives and support staff, each and everyone, were dedicated and committed to me having a happy experience.

What could be improved

More windows throughout Queens Hospital!

Positive reports about Queens Maternity Unit publicised in the press and on the TV. I have had several pregnant women approach me to ask where I had my baby and how I found the Maternity Unit at Queens, as they were terrified after hearing the media reports. I reassured them, but feel that although tragedies must be investigated, dealt with and reported, positive aspects must also be put forward so that other pregnant women are not stressed or upset as they give birth.

Anything else?

I had an excellent birth and care experience at Queens Hospital. My baby was also cared for in such a tender way. I am so thankful to everyone at Queens Maternity Services. I will be forever grateful for the care I received.
