"Nurses short of staff"

About: St Thomas' Hospital / Maternity care

I found that their was not enough support available to us, I think there were only 2 good nurses for the whole ward I was in. I had to wait very long to be seen by a nurse when called for one. It was my first child so I felt very scared but now I know for the next baby what it’s like and I’ll be more prepared. Straight after my c-section the doctor told me I lost a lot of blood but I will be fine. I was not given and advise or anything to help me recover straight after the operation only until I went for my 6 weeks check up and my GP asked me how I was feeling because he had received a letter from the hospital that I had lost a lot of blood and he then gave me iron tablets. I wish I had taken those iron tablets straight after my operation because I did suffer and was very tierd and thought it was normal to feel that way.

Thank you for your feedback. We are so sorry that your experience was not a positive one. Our maternity unit has been extremely busy recently and unfortunately it has taken us longer to respond to women’s than it should. We would like to apologise for this and also for the lack of advice given to you regarding your recovery following your caesarean section. We will share this feedback with the team so that we can put steps in place to prevent this happening in the future.
