My brother was admitted to AAU. As he had no less than 4 stoma bags, my mum had to help empty them one day when she visited as the nurses were busy. Stoma bags smell when they are emptied, but you cannot decide when they need emptying in the same way you can't decide when to stop weeing! My mum thought she was being helpful (which, lets face it, she was as my brother had already been waiting for over an hour!). Once emptied, my mum covered the bowl and asked the nurse (I use that term very loosely!) where she could empty it - the nurse had a go at both my mum and my brother, saying in future don't empty stoma bags during visitors hours at it's not nice for the other patients and their visitors – the nurse made my brother feel completely humiliated. I did ring in to the nurse in charge to complain, I have to say this person was lovely. However, I hope the nurse concerned never has to have a stoma bag, let alone 4. It turns out my brother was dying, and he lost every scrap of dignity he had left. I am so angry that the nurse made him feel like that, whatever happened to patient dignity and care being primary concern?

My brother died in Intensive Care - they were wonderful and couldn't have been more helpful and kind to him. AAU could learn something from them, as they treated him with dignity even after he'd died.
