About: Freeman Hospital

What I liked

My wife stayed on ward 29 and the nursing staff were very helpful and always busy - Thankfully they allowed her to come home with a programme of IV drugs for us to administer at home. There appears to be no formal system to manage and oversee this service but the benefits are huge. My wife got home to her own bed and environment, she was able to eat better, sleep better and concentrate and getting better. Thank you to everyone

What could be improved

Dedicated person who can be your contact and fascilitate the home IV. My wife has a portacath and it is fairly simple to use and something we have done a number of times. However, it seems to only be available by request. Given that it is easier for the patient to be home, less stressful for the patient and family and cheaper for the NHS in these times of cuts surely this is an idea that should be expanded on.

Anything else?

Doctors information varied and was casual in its delivery

We are grateful for the comments on ward 29 particularly those on the helpful nature of the nursing team.

We fully support home therapy for the benefits mentioned and can save weeks of disruption for patients by allowing them to return home early.

Home intravenous antibiotic services are not currently a fully funded service on a national basis.

We are grateful to the dedication of the team of nurses on ward 29 who help support this initiative which is not widely available elsewhere in the region.

Provision of a dedicated person in a role to facilitate home IVs beyond the current service is under active review within the Trust.

We endeavour to have the clearest communication possible and hope that you and your wife's experience for her next admission is improved upon.
