"Staff understanding Parkinson's"

About: Pilgrim Hospital

(as the patient),

I was treated ok apart from my medication times. Staff did not know anything about Parkinson medication. At times I was treated as a person who was being stupid when I tried to explain the medication I needed and the time. I could have managed my own medication but the staff would not let me explain what was needed. At times I did not have any medication because the staff counted the medication and said no way.

Firstly I am very sorry to be replying to your posting so long after you wrote it but please be assured that even after such a period of time your feedback is still extremely valuable.

Secondly I am sorry about the evident problems you had with medication times and as a nurse I recognise how crucial it is to receive your medication on time particularly if you suffer from Parkinson's Disease - but also for any condition. We have recently been undertaking a great deal of work around how we manage medication times on the wards and generally such as supplies from pharmacy etc and recognise that there is room for improvement and have plans in place to do just that. Alongside this we are launching a project soon to implement patient self medication and have wards on each of our 3 main sites who will be piloting this. I appreciate that this is a little late for your experience but I hope you can see that we genuinely appreciate patient feedback and are learning from it.

Thank you again for sharing your experience with us.
