"Labour and wharncliffe ward"

About: Rotherham Hospital / Maternity care

The midwife who delivered my baby was amazing. The ward was extremely busy and she didn't have the support she was meant to have but she made the whole labour simple and talked me through everything so that I felt involved. She also kept my husband involved so that he could support and encourage me. She was an asset to the staff at Rotherham.

On the wharncliffe ward I had a very nice midwife at night. She was very supportive and helped with my baby as my baby was wanting to feed for hours and wouldn't settle. She also helped on the second day as I was told I was going to be discharged at 11 in the morning. I had all my checks and was ready to go at 4.30 but needed the paperwork doing. At 8 after handover the midwife explained that I didn't need anything doing and because I had been up all night the night before she would try to get me home asap. Me and my partner hadn't slept during the day as we hadn't really been explained the process and that actually I could be there all day! I cannot fault the midwife as although the ward was busy she did her utmost to help me both times she was there she introduced herself on every shift so that the patients knew who to ask for and she had great client relationship. I understand the ward was busy but I would not know what the midwife was called during the day. I wouldn't even know what they looked like as I had very little communication.

Overall I would use these facilities again. I was a pretty simple birth and didn't really need much assistance from the team but when I did they were helpful. I honestly think that the midwife really did her job well and should be praised for how she handled a tricky situation. All that was needed was some communication and that's what she did. Told us what the situation was. Why there was delays and when we could expect to go home. 2 minutes time but we knew where we stood. If only we'd had it at 4 in the afternoon or even 11 in the morning we'd have been a lot more prepared for our 2nd night of parenthood.

Hello my name is Samantha, thank you for taking the time to post your kind comments regarding the care and treatment you received during your recent delivery. We really appreciate your positive feedback. However, with regard to the lack of communication I and appreciate that being kept fully informed is important as this does allow you to be prepared and not to raise you expectations unnecessarily. If you would like me to look into this matter in more detail, please contact my Patient Experience Team on 01709 424461 so we can discuss your concerns in confidence or by emailing the at yourexperince@rothgen.nhs.uk.

May I take this opportunity to wish you and your family well for the future.

With best wishes

I support the organisation in making sure that the voice of patients and the public is heard and used in planning services. This involves running events, managing surveys, and building networks with the local community.

Thanks for your post - and congratulations on your new little one!

Personal stories like this are really amazing. You have obviously thought a lot about your experience, and have been able to point out where things worked well, and where they could be improved; these sort of comments are incredibly valuable.

You might also be interested in hearing about the following.

We are working with 'Forging Families' to develop Maternity Voices in Rotherham, and want to work with mum's and families to make sure that services are working well for people. This is in the really early stages - we've only had one meeting so far.

But its not just about meetings - Forging families link into lots of mums through Facebook, so we can really hear what's important to people, and where we aren't getting things right every time. They also have a web site with lots of links and information.

If you have a few minutes (I know these are scarce with a new little one!); why not make contact with Forging Families? I know that they would appreciate your comments, as well as providing links to lots of other new mums

Helen
