"District nursing dressing management"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Community Nursing Service

(as a service user),

I was discharged from Monklands in August 2017, having had extensive tissue removal from my left leg after having necrotising fasciitis. I had been in hospital for 12 weeks, and had not been expected to survive. My dressings were a major job each day, I had a vacuum pump attached for a long time.

When I had surgery my wound was huge, around 12 inches by 8 inches, and just under an inch deep. It had shrunk a bit by discharge. The district nurses came to the house 7 days a week, and changed the dressings daily. This was necessary because of the leakage, and the high danger of infection, which could have, at that time, been life threatening.

These nurses are dedicated, taking great care with technique, and control of infection measures. Gradually, we could see an improvement, and shrinkage. Now, 6 months later, it is incredible. It is barely recognisable it has shrunk so much, and is much more manageable at home. My life is much more comfortable and enjoyable, and at no time has there been any sign of infection.

My partner and I can never thank these girls enough. They are all kind and caring, but especially the most regular nurses, Pauline and Stephanie, who have become firm friends. They often help out with any problems we have with advice, and there visits have become pleasurable.

Dear Sinbad555

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your journey.

I was heartened to hear of the positive experience provided by your District Nurses

It is good for the staff to get feedback and I will make sure you kind words are communicated to the staff involved.

I hope you continue to make good with your wound healing.

Thank you again

Morag
