"Care of the elderly"

About: Chelsea & Westminster Hospital / Accident and emergency

How disappointed I am wth the care my 90 yr old mum has received in the last 2 days. Ambulance staff, A&E Urgent care fantastic, until she went to David Eurskin ward. She was admitted with serious dehydration, and Urinery sepsis. She also had Dementia which has worsened due to infection. So I was surprised to find my mother had no jug of water at her bed side, when I mentioned this to the nurse her reply was along the lines of well she been on a drip, I then had to ask the receptionist to get some for her. She had know call bell which she understood how to use. I was also given wrong information. Before I left I mentioned to three members of staff that due to a disability shower being installed at home, please could they see that she has a shower/bath the next day. All three said this would be done.

Today I visited her to find that knowsuch thing had been done, surely having urinery sepsis is should be obvious that hygiene was of the most importance. Her nurse was very unapproachable gave barley apologised. We then found that during her move from one bay to another her reading material had all gone missing, reading and looking at picture are important to her memory. She was moved to a bay so staff could keep an eye on her because she is frail and very unsteady. Yet again no bell, know walking frame, if she wanted to go to the toilet she would have attempted to do so on her own.

Left on her table was a fluid wheel that she was expected to record herself . SHE HAS DEMENTURE, plus had nothing to write with if she could. For the 3.5 hours one of us was with her she never passed any urine. Know one asked or checked on her fluid intake. On three occasions we asked to speak to a senior member of staff and nothing happened even though I saw a very nice student pass our message on.

I am worried sick as to her care when not with her, will she fall, get dehydrated again.

What are we going to find tomorrow.

Three years ago we contacted the hospital about the wonderful care my dad received on his stays and how well supported the family was when he died.

We pleaded with the ambulance crew to take us to this hospital as they intended to take her to another.

My sister was a nurse, i work and care for people in a NHS hospital for The last 16 years and also spent time working in a care home, so we know what to expect.

I am very sorry to read about your mothers experience on our David Erskine Ward. Please do get in touch with us and we can ask the relevant manager to look in to this for you.

Best wishes
