My quad bypass csme as a surprise in spite of no obvious symptoms due to a vigilant nurse at my GP. A series of tests at the Salisbury cardiac unit was followed by admission to the cardiac unit at SUH last August. THE admission process was not ideal, having been called early in the morning, I was waiting all the morning and was then called in a great hurry. I unsurprisingly have no recollection of what happened while I was 'out' and I am told that I had a second visit to theatre to deal with bleeding. I was in the ward for only 5 days after the surgery which i find amazing and the care which i received was exemplary in its kindness. I have no complaints about the meals. An unfortunate feature, about which I have noted a number of other comments, was the discharge process. Having been advised early I could go home, I was then waiting until the late afternoon. However the main cause of the delay was that the duty surgeon, who was required to approve my departure was delayed by an emergency elsewhere in the hospital. No complaint about that; these things happen.
An afterthought: I was not prepared for the extent to which the strength in my legs and my sense of balance have been affected and the time taken for recovery which is still proceeding.
The follow up is that my wife is waiting her consultants appointment regarding an aortic valve replacement which was due today but due to the weather conditions we have had to cancel. I have phoned the cardiac department and without any fuss was given an alternative appointment.
