Hello
In 2016 I was diagnosed as hypothyroid. I had actually been for 8 years but no GP had told me. Instead I was offered anti - Ds, told I was CFS, told it was my age and I should slow down. No recognition of the symptoms.
Once diagnosed, like all NHS patients I went on levothyroxine. I unfortunately did not get better and paid to see a private endocrinologist. After 6 months of remaining symptomatic. I decided to self medicate on liothyronine. I confirmed that I have Dio2 gene mutation thats thought to hinder conversion of thyroid hormones.
Immediately I was symptom free. At that time my CCG concluded that liothyronine was not to be prescribed in primary care and the NHS England confirmed that in late 2017. I now self medicate on NDT, pay for all my own blood tests and when needed my private endocrinologist. At some stage I will have to decide if I will fight for liothyronine but the prospect of having to make myself unwell again to prove I need liothyronine is not one I want to face.
"Getting the care I need for thyroid."
