"Addiction Services Northumberland"

About: Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust / Addiction services

(as a carer),

My son recently disclosed he had become addicted to heroin and needed help. He rang the local Addictions service on the in the first week of May to ask for their help. They took his details and said someone would ring him last week sometime. As he had heard nothing he rang them again and was told someone would ring him the following day. They rang back last week and offered to see him a week on Friday!

Surely in Addictions the service should be responding to people who are asking for help in a more timely fashion. By the time next Friday comes he might have changed his mind about wanting to get clean as he will have had another two weeks of using.

Thank you for your feedback. As a service and in collaboration with our Service User involvement worker we have developed clear systems of referral and provided training to all our staff to ensure that any resident of Northumberland who is seeking help for their drug problem should be seen quickly and their needs addressed as soon as possible.

I am concerned to hear of your son’s case, and I would be happy to meet up with you to discuss, and to understand why your son has not received the level of support we would have expected.
