I called the surgery and they kindly offered me an emergency appointment, a couple of hours later, due to a mental health crisis. I arrived absolutely in bits, nervous, shaky, tearful. During my 10-minute appointment, the doctor:
- Offered me an anti-depressant I'd never heard of ("People seem to be taking these these days"). I asked what was the difference between it and the one I'm used to. The doctor googled it briefly and said "I think they're basically the same."
- Asked ZERO safeguarding questions - self-harm, suicide, assessment form - nothing.
- Spent more time asking me about my supposedly interesting job than about my mental health.
- Had printer problems and complained literally THREE times "We're going to run over."
- When I mentioned I couldn't stop thinking about death, the doctor decided that my problem was unresolved grief (over a friend's death 7 years ago, despite my having had mental health issues for 20+ years). Again, not a single question about harming myself.
This is the kind of mental health provision I would have expected in the 1990s. I've had some fantastic GPs in this regard in recent years, but this was an awful experience. For obvious reasons, I was in no state to kick up a fuss at the time. I just walked out feeling shell-shocked.
I'm not sure how much use this review will be to people, given that I'm not allowed to name the GP in question. The others might be fantastic, I don't know. Good luck.
"Very poor mental health care"
