"Disgraceful services"

I was refered to Malham House due to my recent suicide attempt and my concerns regard extreme mood swings from severe depression to extremely high moods accompanied with delusions. I was given an appointment with a mental health nurse where i discussed these issues. I described extremely low moods (an my recent attempt of suicide) and my extreme high moods where I feel euphoric, don't sleep for days on end and have delusional thoughts, that if acted out could lead to severe injury of myself. I was told by the nurse I do not have a severe metal health disorder and that I should self-refer to counselling. I was also told by the mental health nurse I would not be allowed to see a psychiatrist.

I do not see how this is acceptable. I clearly show symptoms of a severe mental health disorder, especially considering my family history of bipolar disorder otherwise why would I have been referred in the first place. If severe depression (leading to suicidal ideation and attempts) as well as severe high moods accompanied by delusions, which make me lose touch with reality, do not constitute a mental health disorder then I do not know what does.

To further express the disgraceful service of Malham House, the mental health nurse was not supportive and was rather dismissive and almost argumentative.

Completely unacceptable service.

Dear Anonymous

I am sorry to hear that you found your experience of attending an assessment at Malham House unsatisfactory.

The usual process when a service user is seen, is that the details of the assessment are discussed with a senior clinician within the team, or that they are discussed at a multi-disciplinary team meeting where a consultant psychiatrist, psychologist, clinical lead nurse and clinical team manager are present along with other members of the wider team.

It is usually at that point a decision is made on what the team think may be main presenting problem(s) and using professional judgement may make a decision on the best course of action to follow. This should then be feedback to you for discussion.

If this wasn't your experience then the Clinical Team Manager (CTM) at Malham House would be happy to discuss your concern further is happy to look into your experience in more detail.

We take any issue raised very seriously and wish to ensure all people accessing our service receive the best possible care and experience. Your feedback is welcomed and the manager of the team will remind staff of the process of discussing all assessments as detailed above.

Please make direct contact with the CTM on 0113 85 59300 if you wish to discuss further.
