"Infection control"

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Stroke care

(as a relative),

Whilst visiting my mum today she asked the nurse for bed pan. She was on nil by mouth as she was scheduled for theater. Nurse duly brought in bed pan, assisted mum onto this.

During this time porters came to collect another patient going for scan and nurse was assisting with this. So when mum was finished to help nurse I assisted her off the bed pan. Whilst removing this from under her, the laminated nil by mouth sign came out with it. I was so shocked at this and I'd not say anything but it has been on my mind all day. The nurse obviously thought that this would slide in/ out better with the laminated sign. How disgusting and who would have taught anyone this? Is this common practice?

No wonder infections are spread within the hospital environment. The last time we had cause to complain we were written up as a challenging family.

But I will be seeking out the person in charge of the ward as I feel I cannot let this go.

Dear Netyie

I am really concerned to read your comment - this must have been extremely upsetting for both yourself and your mum. This is not the standard of care I would expect.Good infection control practice is key to safe patient care and should be a core component of everything we do.

Should you wish to contact me directly, I would be able to identify the ward in question and raise your concerns directly with them.

I can be contacted at Marie.Farrell@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

I hope that your mum is recovering well

With kind regards
