This surgery used to be my surgery and I rate my past experience with doctors face-to-face very highly here. But my recent experience greatly concerned me. Whilst visiting my parents, my 7 month old son developed a rash. Naturally worried and anxious to have it checked out, I called the surgery and they said I’d receive a call back appointment to assess whether he needed to see a doctor. Within an hour we received a call from a nurse, who listened to my description and being a first-time mother, I gave her the past month’s illness my son had fought to build the bigger picture and help her understand his situation. She was quiet dismissive and diagnosed it as a teething rash. On return to my home surgery, I saw a doctor 4 days later, who clarified it is an allergic reaction and he is now on a steroid cream (which apparently is usually avoided for use on baby skin and could have been prevented had we seen someone). He had suffered itching his face, the rash spreading and sleepless nights. Had we been seen, perhaps a correct diagnosis would have been provided. This might be to save time/resources, but I would strongly discourage such practice, particularly when dealing with vulnerable patients.
