I visited this clinic today for Flexible Cystoscopy procedure today and was discharged after being told to go to the tollet to ensure that my bladder was functioning satisfactorily after the treatment
Everything seemed ok and the nurse promptly discharged me
As I walked to the main entrance of the hospital 2 or 3 minutes later I experienced agonising pain and the need to urinate was unbearable
I managed to reach the main entrance I made my way to the toilets and started to lose control of my bladder and soiled myself and urinated whole blood in a stream which was frightening and absoloutely frightening and extremely painful
In the main lobby of the Hospital were nurses from Macmillan Cancer care and I sked them what I should do as I could only just stand up as I was now in agonising pain
The nurse told me to go back to the day unit and they would treat me as I had only left the unit less than 10 minutes before
I managed to stagger back to the unit and asked a receptionist for help and explained that I was bleeding and in extreme pain
She was very polite and told me to sit down whilst she tried to get a nurse to see me
Ten minutes later the pain got worse and I asked the receptionist to try and hurry the nurse up and that I was bleeding
She went into the treatment area and told me to go to A and E in the main hospital and the nurse would not see me as I had been discharged 10 minutes ago
I was unable to walk that far by now as my condition had deteriated badly and I asked to speak to somebody in charge of the unit to seek urgent help
The receptionist went back into the treatment area and spoke to the consultant in charge, she told me that he would not treat me or see me and that it was no longer their responsibility to treat me anymore
I explained to the receptionist that someone in that unit had treated me several minutes before and that I needed help and advice, and I was in acute distress being a 64 year old man being investigated for bladder cancer
The consultant then saw me and did not examine me atall
He prescribed painkillers and antibiotics and said that sometimes there were problems after this procedure
No aphology was offered, or any reasonable explanation was given about discharging patients without checking that everything was allright after this procedure
I was discharged immediately following my visit to the toilet within five minutes of that procedure
When I visited the PALS office to complain about my treatment he explained to me that the unit should keep watch on patients at least 30 to 60 minutes after treatment before discharge and I told him that nobody checked my condition before discharge
