My partner was admitted to a & e with breathing difficulties and pain. A & E was so busy that there were several people on trolleys being treated in the corridors and waiting room. He was moved around the department 6 times, from nurse to nurse.
I asked for pain relief for him but his pain was still not controlled until 13 hours later! It was an extremely stressful time for both of us. Once he was moved to a ward, I asked a nurse if he could have some medication and she got very annoyed and gave me a lecture that she only had one pair of hands. The way I was treated was disgraceful and she brought me to tears.
On the whole I think the staff are doing an amazing job in a very difficult situation. A &E is under so much pressure that it doesn’t appear to be safe. No one knows what’s going on and they didn’t have the correct records of the medication they had given (possibly as it was too chaotic to have time to record anything). I don’t blame the nurses and health care assistants in a & e, they r trying their best but something has to change.
